Suicidal Thinking and Threats - Helping Handout for Home (NASP)
As difficult as it can be, a proven protective factor in preventing suicide is to ask your child the following questions: 1. Have you thought about hurting yourself? 2. Have you hurt yourself? 3. Have you had any thoughts of suicide? Do you have a plan for suicide? SUICIDE IS PREVENTABLE AND TALK CAN SAVE LIVES
Limiting Means in the Home
Parents/guardians can limit the student’s access to mechanisms for carrying out a suicide attempt (e.g., guns, knives, pills, etc.) by locking them or removing them from the residence.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) estimates that approximately one in five Americans experiences mental illness in a given year. That’s 20 percent of Americans. Yet there is still a stigma attached to it. Here are some resources that you may find helpful to support your child or family.
NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults with mental illnesses and their families. For over 40 years, NAMI Minnesota has worked to promote the development of community mental health programs and services, change public attitudes about mental illnesses, improve access to services and increase opportunities for recovery.
